Background
The Center for Social Science Research and Training (CSRT) is a unique organization committed to conducting credible research, fostering policy dialogue, disseminating policy options, and developing coalitions to promote informed policy-making. The Centre also conducts training on research methodologies and evaluates development interventions. In that pursuit, CSRT is involved in the collection and generation of socio-economic data for carrying out analytical and policy-loaded research on current economic and social issues and the dissemination of research findings and knowledge on developmental concerns to support policy formulation. So it is a multidisciplinary research unit consisting of professors working under the faculty of Social Sciences and allied disciplines of Jagannath University with diverse backgrounds like Social Work, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Journalism, Public Administration, and Political Sciences. The unit is proficient in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research.
Objectives of the Centre
The strategic objectives of CSRT are crystallized around the theme of generating credible policy-oriented research on development issues facing Bangladesh and other developing countries along with strengthening research-policy links to promote informed policy-making in Bangladesh. In the pursuit of its strategic objectives, CSRT activities are multi-dimensional and inherently straddle several objectives:
- Promote excellence in policy research and extend the knowledge frontiers to facilitate learning in development solutions, especially in priority areas of development related to the social well-being of the poor and disadvantaged groups in society;
- Collect and generate socioeconomic data to facilitate the conduct of analytical research on current social issues and facilitate development planning and policy formulation by the government;
- Disseminate knowledge and research-based policy options to the policymakers and assist them in designing credible development strategies for achieving economic and social goals;
- Expand outreach of research to civil society and other stakeholders to help shape policy debates on key development issues, develop broader understanding and consensus, and promote a knowledge-based policy agenda;
- Conduct training and capacity-building programs and promote the application of cutting-edge research techniques and appropriate methodologies in economics and allied social sciences to develop human and institutional capacities within the government and in other institutions;
- Promote research communication and networking to share research findings and stimulate interaction within the research community, policymakers, civil society, and other stakeholders through organizing workshops, seminars, and conferences, and using different modes of print and electronic media.
Activities of the Centre
The objectives of the Centre are pursued through a variety of activities such as; research, training, seminars, conferences, dialogue, advocacy, consultancy, and publications.
i. Research
The Centre will conduct basic and applied research on different social and economic issues. These are sponsored by the Centre itself or by national and international agencies. The Centre co-operates with universities, individual scholars and research institutions both within and outside the country on matters of research and other common professional interests.
ii. Training
The Centre offers training through lectures, seminars, workshops and field studies to its members and other interested personnel, on the design and methodology of theoretical and empirical research related to urban and regional problems. Special workshops on important urban and regional problems are, arranged where both academicians and practitioners in urban and regional affairs can participate.
iii. Seminars
The Centre will hold regular seminars where members participate in discussions related to social and economic and contemporary issues. Special seminars are also organized in which distinguished scholars and experts in the organization are invited to lecture.
iv. Consultancy
The Centre provides consultancy services about social and economic issues to the government, semi-government, autonomous and private organizations and also to different international bodies on matters of mutual interest.
v. Publications
The Centre will publish its research in the form of research reports, monographs, bulletins, books and other literature relevant to the interest of the Centre. If funding is available the centre will also take necessary action to publish a scholarly journal.
